The undulating 4.592km long Autodromo Internacional do Algarve was once more bathed in warm sunshine for what proved to be a hotly contested fight at the front, with many riders’ fortunes rising and falling as the race unfolded at high speed.
Having finished ninth in first race at Portimao on Saturday, Alcoba made a decent start and after displaying a strong and consistent pace he was to stay in contention for a podium place after early race leader Can Öncü crashed out at mid-race distance.
At the end of the second WorldSSP race of the Portimao weekend he was to cross the finish line just over half a second from the rider in third place, proving his strong early season credentials as a rookie WorldSSP rider once again. His top six finish was also a vindication of the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R 636, which is taking part in its first season as a full WorldSSP-spec machine.
In the Riders’ Championship ranking Jeremy is seventh, on 34 points, although he shares this total with Marcel Schrötter. He is officially ranked one place ahead of Alcoba as Schrötter has taken a better personal best race result than Jeremy over the first four races.
Alcoba is, in reality, just two points off of the fifth place rider in the points standings, after two full championship rounds have been completed.
The next race weekend takes place at Assen in the Netherlands, with the classic old former roads circuit hosting Round Three between 11-13 April.
Jeremy Alcoba, stated: “I am a little tired today because I pushed very hard in that race. Starting from P10 I made a normal start but I tried to gain some positions on the first lap. The feeling, compared to yesterday, was much better with a full fuel tank. I could push a lot from the beginning so the feeling was really good, and also the pace was strong. The problem was that I had some gap from the guys in the front but I was pushing, pushing, pushing to catch them. So, it is true that when I caught them I was already tired. I was also fighting with the bike because I had a bit of chatter - although it was much better than yesterday. I missed something to help me in the turns but I was trying to push to the limit. But I am really happy because compared to yesterday the direction was much better and I think we had a really good race.”
