More Points For Determined Öncü

Can Öncü (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) ran up front at the start of the 20-lap Race Two at his team’s local track in Cremona, ending up eighth at the flag.

The twisty layout of the 3.768km long Cremona Circuit in northern Italy provided the backdrop for the ninth round of the season, with Öncü not only ending up inside the top ten but running as high as fourth for the first six laps.

Can had set the sixth best time in Saturday’s otherwise unlucky race and that saw him start from the second row of the grid for Race Two.

As the race continued Can’s race set-up and package gradually led to a drop pace and track position. Öncü battled hard until the very end, holding off a challenge from another rider across the line to finish inside the top eight places.

In the championship standings Can is 12th after the completing of the Cremona round, with 78 points in total.

Can Öncü, stated: “Today we had a better race than on Saturday. At least we had a good pace and I tried to stay with the guys out in front. We will try to improve even more in Aragon next week - but we are happy because we made a good step compared to some races this season. I have a very positive outlook and when we checked at the end of this race we were quite a lot faster than before. It was nice to be riding with the front guys again. This track layout is not one of our favourites. We like tracks like Aragon more than here, so I hope to enjoy ourselves even more next week.”

Spanish rider Borja Gomez Rus (Viamo Racing by MTM Kawasaki) took his Ninja ZX-6R to 22nd place in the dry and warm second race conditions.

A very quick turnaround for the WorldSSP teams will be required after the Cremona weekend, as round ten takes place at Motorland Aragon in Spain between 27-29 September.
