Öncü Unfortunate In Short Race Two

A planned two part WorldSSP Race Two at Phillip Island in Australia was reduced to a single nine lap contest after a long delay due to an earlier oil leak on the track surface. Can Öncü (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) was 16th after being forced to avoid another competitor, running off track to do so.

After a tough Superpole Qualifying session on Saturday Can had work to do even if the second Phillip Island race had been run over all 18-laps as planned. Can was down on the fifth row of the grid for the start.

After the race was finally run in a sprint format, and for only nine laps, Can found a good pace and was making progress. He was forced wide by the actions of another rider, dropping him to 16th place. He missed out on a championship point by just one position.

Despite his second dose of misfortune after Saturday’s DNF in Race One, Öncü knows he had strong pace to take into the next round of the championship.

Can Öncü, stated: “Starting from row five in a race that runs over just nine laps makes everything more difficult. I started strong and got into a good rhythm, making up places, but unfortunately, in the final stages of the race, a rider who had crashed came back onto the track without checking who was coming and I had to exit the track to avoid hitting him. Beyond the result itself, these two races have shown that we have the potential to do well, but also that we need to continue working to improve, which would allow us to fight for the win every weekend.”

Hikari Okubo (Vince 64 Kawasaki) placed 24th in the second race, with Marcel Brenner (Viamo Racing by MTM Kawasaki) 25th.

The next round of the WorldSSP championship will take place at the Circuit de Barcelona - Catalunya, between 22-24 March.
