Öncü Scores After Intense Jerez Race

Kawasaki Puccetti Racing rider Can Öncü scored points again as he continued his comeback from a long-term left arm injury in Race One at Jerez. Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) was the best placed Kawasaki rider on the day, in sixth place.

After a sometimes wet and frequently overcast first day of action in the final Round of the 2023 WorldSSP season, Saturday 28 October provided warm and sunny conditions for Superpole qualifying and the first race of the weekend.

Having qualified 11th in Superpole, Öncü finished in 11th place in the race having been up as high as seventh. His fitness and stamina is increasing each day but he still needs time for his left arm to regain full strength to allow him to keep up his good pace for full race distance.

Can Öncü, stated: “I had a not bad feeling in the race. Actually, the bike was perfect but we are still working hard to improve my arm. I am very happy because we made a big step but we still have to improve a little bit more with the arm for next season. When it is OK I don’t think we will have so many problems anymore. I know I am fast and we can see this in the first laps of the race.”

In the first race, held over 17-laps, Huertas would replicate his qualifying position of sixth in the race, despite a strong early start to move up to fourth on lap one.

Leonardo Taccini (Vince 64 Kawasaki) was 20th on the opening race.

One more race remains in the 2023 season, to be held one more at 12.30, on Sunday 29 October.
